The Nature of Hay Day
Early morning field. The ground still dressed in dew’s jewelry glints and boasts God’s extravagance in how He created this earth. The sun is shining, but not yet fully heating the air. There’s potential for a hot, humid day ahead, but not yet.
The pleasure of needing to stand in a field, not just wanting to but needing to, satisfies that strange urge we have to find a reason to not be at work someplace else that day. Of course, it sounds wonderful to say something like, “We are free enough from constraints within ourselves to enjoy time in nature without creating an excuse for needing to do so.” But the reality is that even with farming, I find myself honestly enjoying having a good reason to do this.
This year I missed out on the hay collection day. I had to be at work in the bigger city. I was talking to my father about how I do enjoy my job, but that it still requires sacrifice in some ways.
